How to optimise your Seed Request
Seed Requests allows you to find and request seeds based on suitable species, to help you meet your planting timelines. We need a few details from you that will help optimise your seeds request.
Generating the species list
Upon creating a new seeds request for a project (either existing or new), a list of suitable species will be provided to help narrow down your search. There are two ways this species list can be generated.
- From Project Location: this option outputs a list of suitable species based on your project location. The species provided are native to and naturally occur in the region of your project.
- You can choose an existing project (from land assessment)
To specify the location for which you require seed, you can outline a project area on the map, using the polygon drawing tool on the map . Once you click the icon, you can click on the map to indicate the first point of the area you are drawing. You can complete the shape by clicking back on the first point.
Alternatively, you can use the search functionality on the map to search an address.
You can also use the ‘upload’ button to upload a geospatial file. Once you have uploaded a file, you will see the filename indicated next to the button.
You don’t have to know the exact project area or outline, as we take a tile of Australia where the property lies and output the species that are native to and naturally occur in the wider area. If so, you can use the ‘drop pin’ functionality. Select the ‘drop pin’ icon from the map, and drop it on the map to indicate the location.
Once your location has been created correctly, click next.
- Select Own Species: this option is available for users who already have a suite of species in mind for planting. You can search and select from an entire database of Australia’s native plant species.
Date seeds are required
Selecting the date that seeds will be required by your planting team will help us when liaising with seed suppliers on your behalf.
It is important to order seeds well in advance, as suppliers only stock certain species at certain times of the year. Selecting an accurate date is particularly important if you have a clear idea of the species you wish to plant. Sourcing appropriate seed for a project can take up to a few months.
Additional information
For some planting projects, information related to the seed batch that you are purchasing is important. This information informs best practices for seed germination.
Indicating whether or not you require this additional information will help us determine which seed suppliers to liaise with on your behalf. This is because not all seed suppliers have this information on-hand for all seed batches, or the supplier may not treat or test the seeds themselves.
- Seed Treatment: Any physical or chemical technique applied to seeds that is required to break seed dormancy and facilitate water uptake for germination.
- Seed Viability: The inherent ability of a seed to germinate under suitable conditions. Germination testing is one method to determine the viability of a seed batch.
- Seed Provenance: The origin of the seed batch. Where, geographically, the parent plant grows and from which seeds are collected.
Selecting Species & Seed Quantity
Selecting your desired species and their seed quantities will differ based on the way the species list was generated.
- From Project Location: If you have opted to have a list of suitable species generated for you, you can select desired species by using the search bar. A suite of filters have been pre-applied to help narrow down your species search. You can change these filters according to your project needs.
- Select Own Species: Use the search bar to find and select the species you wish to plant from an entire database of Australia’s native plant species.
Seed Availability
To help narrow down your search, an indication of seed availability is shown for all species. Species are categorised as either more frequently available, less frequently available or unknown availability. Seed availability is based on how many Australian seed suppliers have had stock for this species in the past, and should be used as an indication of potential supply only.
Note; While you can request seeds for species with ‘unknown availability,’ please be aware that additional research will be undertaken by our team to source these seeds on your behalf. However, the likelihood of suppliers stocking such species is low. For all species, regardless of availability status, seed sourcing is not guaranteed, as availability is seasonal and subject to change.
Submitting your request
Once submitted, you will receive an email with a copy of your request. At this point, an AirSeed team member will liaise with seed suppliers on your behalf to source the species, quantity of seed, and any additional information you have requested. We will be in contact to discuss your options should suppliers be unable to fulfil your request within your desired timeframe. You may edit your request from the Seed Requests landing page, or by contacting grovia.
Seed Suppliers near you
A list of seed suppliers collecting and/or operating in your region will be provided upon submission of your seeds request. AirSeed will prioritise the sourcing of seeds from local suppliers wherever possible, providing you with the most appropriate seed available for your project.
